• A drop in the ocean = thứ gì đó quá nhỏ để tạo nên ảnh hưởng.

Ví dụ: Cleaning only the dishes won’t make a difference; the whole house is so dirty! It would be a drop in the ocean.

 

• A ray of sunshine = được dùng khi một vật hay người nào đó đem lại hy vọng trong tình huống khó khăn.

Ví dụ: Louis is a little ray of sunshine, he’s always happy, even if it’s a bad day.

 

• Beat around the bush = có nghĩa là bạn tránh trả lời một câu hỏi, lãng phí thời giờ hay tránh nói về vấn đề quan trọng.

Ví dụ: Stop beating around the bush, just tell me what happened to my car.

 

• Between a rock and a hard place = ở trong một tình thế cực kỳ khó khăn khi phải lựa chọn giữa một trong hai phương án.

Ví dụ: If I study, I won’t have money to pay the university. But if I work, I won’t get my degree….I’m between a rock and a hard place!.

 

• Clear as mud = có nghĩa là vấn đề gì đó rất khó hiểu.

Ví dụ: Your explaination about why you were late again was as clear as mud. Please explain again.

 

• Can’t see the wood for the trees = không nhìn nhận sự việc một cách rõ ràng.

Ví dụ: Paul is so obsessed with his work, he can’t see the bigger picture. He needs to take a step back, he can’t see the wood for the trees.

 

• Down to earth = dùng để chỉ những người có cách sống thoải mái, dễ chịu, sống thư thái.

Ví dụ: Helen is the best person to have in an emergency; she’s so down to earth.

 

• No smoke without fire = không có lửa sao có khói.

Ví dụ: Everyone says Tina is lazy, there’s no smoke without fire.

 

• Go with the flow = mô tả sự thuận theo ý kiến hoặc hành động của mọi người, cho thấy người đó sẵn sàng thích nghi và gạt bỏ ý kiến cá nhân đã vạch ra từ trước.

Ví dụ: Today I want to be relaxed, so I am just going to go with the flow.

 

• The tip of the iceberg = Hàm ý một việc gì đó chỉ là một phần nhỏ thuộc một vấn đề phức tạp.

Ví dụ: The financial problems our company are only the tip of the iceberg. The problems are many more!.
