Các thành ngữ về mùa thu hữu dụng trong tiếng Anh

• Drive someone nuts = chọc tức ai đó.

Ví dụ: Please turn down your music! I can’t think, I can’t study, I can’t do anything. You’re driving me nuts.

 

• Turn over a new leaf = bắt đầu lại từ đầu.

Ví dụ: I’m serious this time. I know I always say I’m going to quit smoking but I’m really serious. It’s time to turn over a new leaf. I just had an annual medical exam and it wasn’t good. It’s time to quit.

 

• Save for a rainy day = giữ một cái gì đó cho tới khi bạn cần dùng tới.

Ví dụ: I didn’t expect to receive this much for my annual bonus! I’m glad to have some extra money to save for a rainy day.

 

• Under the weather = Unwell = không khỏe lắm.

Ví dụ: I’m so sorry to cancel our lunch meeting but I’m feeling under the weather. I think It’s best if I go home to get some rest. I can’t afford to be sick this week!.

 

• Autumn years =  Khi bạn đã ở cái ngưỡng bên kia của cuộc đời, bạn đã “héo mòn” như những chiếc lá rụng mùa thu, ở cái tuổi mà bạn cần sự trợ giúp của một hàm răng giả và chỉ có kêu đau chân tay xương khớp mỗi lần thời tiết thay đổi cũng đã thoáng hết ngày.

Ví dụ: I don’t like to think I’m getting old. I prefer to think I’m entering the autumn years.

 

• Apple of my eye = ý chỉ ai đó hoặc cái gì đó đẹp hơn tất cả những thứ khác trong mắt một người.

Ví dụ: Even though Frank has three children, his youngest has always been the apple of his eye.

 

• To squirrel something away = giấu hay cất trữ cái gì để dùng cho tương lai.

Ví dụ: Lisa squirreled away a lot of money while she was working and now she can enjoy her retirement.

 

• Lost in the mists of time = ý chỉ cái gì đó đã bị quên lãng vì nó đã xảy ra từ rất lâu rồi.

Ví dụ: The true significance of these traditions have been lost in the mists of time.
